“It’s indescribable as an emotion”: Indiana Jones told by French actor Ethann Isidore

Big fan of the Indiana Jones saga and newcomer to “The Dial of Destiny”, Ethann Isidore looks back in pictures on his adventure alongside Harrison Ford, on the sets, in Cannes and Los Angeles.

Ethann Isidore is 16 years old, and he is living the dream of all those who have grown up watching the adventures of Indy: to play alongside Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and last adventure of the archaeologist currently at the movie theater.

In the role of Teddy, the French actor, discovered in Sam et Mortel and a high school student in Orléans, is the youthful asset of the film and he marked by his infectious enthusiasm and his candor the presentation of the feature film at the Cannes Film Festival last May .

Before facing the zombies of The Walking Dead Daryl Dixon, he returned for AlloCiné on the photo album of his Indianajonesesque adventure. Memories sequence!

“So good! That was our entrance to Cannes. We had just left the airport. And there were plenty of photographers taking pictures of us. It was super impressive because it’s the first time that “We were going through this. They took pictures of us a bit by surprise with my family. At first, we weren’t particularly comfortable, but in reality, it’s rather funny.”

“We had just climbed the stairs in Cannes. It was an incredible moment and I find it difficult to describe the emotion it gives because we still feel very ‘powerful’ because we are on top of the steps and there’s all this crowd of people cheering and looking at us. I couldn’t speak…

It was a great experience because I found the team. I hadn’t seen them for two years. It was very moving to see them again climbing the stairs. It’s indescribable emotion. I was living a real dream. So thank you Cannes, thank you Disney and thank you Indiana Jones.”

“It was in Cannes with Harrison Ford. I took him in my arms. Actually, we were having a conversation at the time. Harrison looked at me, he said: “Do you see the excitement you feel there, for Cannes? It’s the same feeling Ke Huy Quan felt for The Temple of Doom. And look where he is now. He has an Oscar”. And that really warmed my heart.

So, I gave him a big hug because Ke Huy Quan is Half Moon! And now he’s starred in Everything Everywhere All At Once… So getting compliments like that, from Harrison Ford, can only be nice.”

“It was the descent of the steps. I was with Harrison, we had just hugged and next to it, we see Mads Mikkelsen who is a great guy too. It’s quite funny because he speaks French. What can’t he do? It’s crazy! (Laughs) There was James Mangold next to Mads. They were all super benevolent.

And I also remember that Boyd Holbrook said to me: “Now enjoy it, it’s your time. It’s only going to happen to you once in a lifetime” And that struck me. It was from that moment that I started jumping, running on the red carpet!

“We had just finished our check with Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Because we both have a special check, like real criminals. We had challenged ourselves to do it on the red carpet.

She asked me for something really cool: to hold her hand on the steps. She could have asked someone else, Harrison Ford. But no, she asked me, Teddy, because I’m her personal crime assistant! (Laughs)

The chemistry between the two of us surprisingly came quite quickly. The first time I saw her was in makeup. She started talking to me. She was super nice, super welcoming, super attentive, she asked me how I got there and how I had been spotted by James Mangold.

She told me that when she read the script, she took out the champagne and cried. And that she was the one who arranged for us to see each other at the same time at the make-up, because she wanted to meet me so that we could talk to each other because we are very close in the film. She’s too nice. He’s one of the best people I’ve met in my life.”

“That’s the photocall in Cannes, the day after the climb of the steps. It was very impressive because there are plenty of photographers who shout “Harrison, Harrison, Harrison, Phoebe, Phoebe, Mads, Mads!!!” But at the same time, it’s a bit funny.

There’s a crowd of people repeating the same names and there’s a sort of flash firework. It’s impressive and quite funny. And that’s when you realize how powerful Harrison is. We are all super impressed and he is there “Monday…” (Laughs)

“At that time, I was also able to jump on the desk with the Palme. It’s a challenge that I set myself with my friends and I took it up too. I’m so proud! All those who challenged, voila, I did it. What are you going to do now?” (Laughs)

Pothier High School

“It’s my high school. The Pothiers high school in Orléans, which is a great high school that allows you to have an option and a cinema specialty. The option is available from the second and then from the first to the final year, you can doing cinema in specialty until the baccalaureate and it’s pretty cool. And no, I’m not in partnership with the school to say that! (laughs)

The first time I told my buddies I was on Indiana Jones, they just didn’t believe me. Except that images have leaked. And since I have some cinephile friends, they were following the news and they knew.

The Walt Disney Company France

“It’s a great poster. I love it because I’m already on it. (Laughs) And I’m next to Phoebe Waller Bridge And Harrison Ford, so I’m even happier. I find it great because there are all the elements that make us love the film.

There’s the tuk tuk scene in the bottom right which is a scene that I love. And there are plenty of scenes that are going to be pretty key in the film. Plus, we see Indy with his whip. But how sexy is this guy!” (Laughs)

The Walt Disney Company France

“This is Teddy’s character poster. We took this shot at Pinewood Studios and I was wondering what it would look like and why they were going to use it. And I’m so happy because I have a character poster. ‘Indiana Jones where I’m the only one on it! It’s so stylish. I’m very proud.”

The Walt Disney Company France

“It’s a scene where Teddy has a first discussion other than confrontational with Indy. The scene is very well written. It expresses the relationship between the two characters well and the gap between the two as well: Teddy is young and he tries to playing adults when Indy is older and he tries to return to his youth through this adventure.

I find that the contrast and the opposition between the two is quite nice in this scene and it pretty much sums up the somewhat nostalgic atmosphere of the film.”

“It was one of the first scenes I shot in Sicily. I loved that scene already because I had the hat. Everyone had a hat, Phoebe, Harrison and me. I was so happy because that I had my little Indiana Jones hat, even if it’s a little worn straw hat. I think it fits the character well.

We were in front of the cathedral, it was magnificent, it was hot… The extras were super nice. They were all dressed like in the 60s. We believed it! This is one of the first scenes where I played alone.

In truth, it made me a little weird because there were a lot of extras and yet the camera was placed on me. It’s a bit overwhelming at first, especially on a big movie like this. And then I thought of Harrison who does this almost every day. I said to myself : “Ah yeah, I have to do it too!”.”

The Walt Disney Company France

“This scene on the boat was shot in two parts. A part in Sicily at sea. And some tight shots in a boat reproduced in the studio, which is reproduced in an incredible way, like all the sets on this film .

It was quite funny because the boat in the studio was bigger than the one in Sicily! It was a bit odd because we had the same reflexes as in Sicily, except that it wasn’t at all the same scale. It was a great scene to shoot. (…)

At sea, I shot with Antonio Banderas. He’s a very nice and funny guy. It was impressive to tell myself that I could work with all these cinema icons. Antonio is one of them and it was very enriching to work with him. I was able to have small Spanish lessons… which I did not retain! (Laughs) But it was a great experience.”

The Walt Disney Company France

“This plane scene is important for the character. It was quite tiring because we shot a lot of takes. And they called us back a few weeks later to tell us “we forgot some shots”!

But I’m really happy to have been able to see the culmination of this scene, a bit like the tuk tuk, because it’s a scene on which we worked a lot. And by the way, Harrison gave me some tips on how to fly a plane for this scene. I can say that I had advice from Harrison Ford to fly a plane!

We shot this scene twice. In Sicily and in the studio. In Sicily, we had a real plane pulled by technicians. And in the studio, then, it was a kind of simulator: it was a bit like an attraction, except that I was paid to do it. I wasn’t paying to go to Disney, which is pretty cool though!” (Laughs)

“That was the premiere in LA. It was an incredible moment. I got to see the movie and it was a little different from Cannes, because this time fans were invited. It was great to to be able to meet them, to be able to talk to them and to put faces on all these fans who were in disguise.

It was great because also in the room there was a real reaction to the film. You could feel the emotion the fans were feeling at that moment. It was one of my best experiences in a cinema, I think.”

“That’s amazing. For the first time in my life, I got to see John Williams in concert. This man is a genius. He knows how to write music for movies. And he does it well all the time Every time he writes music, it’s iconic. I don’t know how he does it. I admire him.

And I was able to meet him. It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life, I think. And I met Spielberg and Lucas. It’s impressive because we tell ourselves that everything we saw throughout our childhood is partly based on these people. It’s still crazy to think that I was able to meet all these Gods of pop culture!

“It’s the poster for Au Revoir Tom Selleck by Ridwane Bellawell and it was my very first project. It was my first short film. I shot it in 2018 in Pantin and it’s great memories. I I was able to make myself known thanks to this film, and then I was able to play in Indiana Jones.

And there is also Dali Benssalah in this film and who will later play in James Bond in the same studios, also in Pinewood. It’s funny though that we both played in very close sagas!

And then you have to know that Tom Selleck was the first choice to play Indiana Jones, except that he couldn’t shoot because he was already under contract for Magnum. This is how Harrison Ford came to star in Indiana Jones. It’s funny that on my first role, the title of the film is named after the guy who was supposed to play Indiana Jones!”
