Samsung is preparing to introduce even more resistant screens in its foldable smartphones, which would be good news, since you constantly have to be careful not to damage those of current models.
Samsung is known for its innovations in the field of foldable devices, but especially for its foldable screens from Samsung Display. The company revolutionized the market with the release of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 with its Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), and it seems that even more resistant glass is already on the horizon.
Samsung has reportedly filed new technology that could make its foldable screens more durable and versatile. According to a report from GalaxyClub, Samsung has filed a trademark application for “Ironflex” technology with the Korean Intellectual Property Office. The brand description reveals that Ironflex is a “foldable OLED panel” that can be used with a foldable device. The brand also suggests that Samsung plans to use Ironflex not only for its foldable phones, but also for its Galaxy wearables and Android tablets.
Samsung wants even more durable foldable screens
Although the brand doesn’t reveal much about the details of Ironflex, it is speculated to be a new type of screen more resistant to bending and scratches than current foldable screenss. Samsung has already improved the durability of its foldable devices by introducing a new waterdrop hinge design for its 2023 foldables, which can withstand 300,000 folds.
Ironflex could further improve the longevity and reliability of foldable displays, and potentially enable new features and designs. For example, Ironflex could allow Samsung to create foldable devices that can bend in either direction, like some of its concepts.
We imagine that Ironflex could also be used for Samsung’s future AR/VR glasses, which would require flexible and lightweight screens, but also in from laptops to foldable screens.
Samsung has not announced when it will launch Ironflex technology, Mays it is possible that it will debut with its next generation of foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6, which are expected to launch sometime next summer. These devices are also rumored to feature design changes, such as thinner bezels, larger external screens and a design that should be closer to that of the upcoming Galaxy S25 in 2025.
