Do you find it difficult to tolerate heat waves? Tell yourself that the same goes for electronic devices, and in particular for certain models of smartphones… to the point of sometimes leading to unfortunate situations.
As a consequence of global warming, the successive heat waves that we have experienced in recent years are harmful both for fragile people and for certain smartphones. And if the degree of gravity is clearly not the same, your mobile is not immune to being in bad shape if a new period of heat wave were to occur.
Intense heat and batteries don’t always mix
A British YouTuber, Mrwhosetheboss, demonstrated on Twitter the effect of the last heat wave on the battery of three of his Samsung Galaxy smartphones. In this case, the battery of the devices concerned swelled, during the last heat wave in July, to the point of taking off their back plate. The person concerned specifies that the smartphones of other brands present in his collection were not affected by this problem of swelling of the batteries. Only the batteries of certain Samsung smartphones therefore seem vulnerable to ambient heat.
As specified SamMobile, this kind of problem is relatively common on old smartphones, regardless of manufacturer, but the three exploded devices discovered by Arun Maini are not particularly old. It would also be surprising if their respective batteries come from one and the same subcontractor, Samsung having worked for years with several different manufacturers for the batteries of its various products. At first glance, it is therefore difficult to explain why these three Samsung models were affected by the heat more than the others.
A few ways to limit the risk of overheating on your smartphones
Anyway, and if you are afraid that your smartphone could be impacted during the next heat wave, there are a few avenues to explore to limit (at least a little) the risk of overheating.
- First, make sure to charge your smartphone with a suitable charger and a power cord in good condition. If you observe overheating during charging, especially in a fast charging context, perhaps opt for a slower charger that will put less strain on the battery during charging.
- Check that some applications do not use too much of the processor in the background during high heat.
- Makes sense, but avoid leaving your smartphone in the sun (we know this can have a serious impact on the battery and other components, including the screen), or too long in a car parked outside.
- Pay attention to the protective case you use. Leather, some plastics or even rubber can contribute to your smartphone’s temperature increase.
- In case of heating over a long period, try switching to airplane mode or turning off your mobile altogether.
