Ferrari says 80% of its sales will be hybrid and electric vehicles by 2030, with its first all-electric model due in 2025.
Article updated on June 16: Ferrari took advantage of a presentation to its shareholders to confirm the rumours. The Italian company has validated the creation of a new production line in Maranello dedicated to electric vehicles. The plant will notably manufacture the batteries (but not the cells), motors and inverters needed for electrified vehicles. Benedetto Vignan, the boss of Ferrari, has confirmed the arrival of a 100% electric car from 2025. In 2030, the Italian manufacturer plans to sell 80% electrified models, including 40% hybrids and 40% pure electrics . In 2035, and logically, the brand should completely stop the sale of thermal cars, as planned by the European Commission.
If Ferrari is not really in a hurry to switch to electric, the Italian firm knows all the same that it will have no choice. And for good reason, the European Commission voted a few days ago to ban the sale of thermal cars from 2035. And it will not be affected by the “Ferrari” amendment, potentially giving an exemption to luxury brands until 2036.
As a reminder, this one, if it were to be adopted, would authorize manufacturers selling less than 10,000 vehicles per year to continue to market internal combustion cars until January 1, 2036 instead of January 1, 2030. Those selling fewer than 1,000 cars each year will not be forced to go electric at all. If Aston Martin, Bugatti or even Lamborghini are affected by these various derogations, this is therefore not the case for the prancing horse brand, which sold 11,155 vehicles in 2021.
A new production line
Ferrari must therefore face the facts and work actively to electrify its range, which began in 2013 with its LaFerrari. But if there is currently a plug-in hybrid model in the catalog, namely the SF90 Stradale, the firm does not market a single 100% electric car. But that should soon change, since it is logically the next step.
As announced by our colleagues from Bloomberg, the manufacturer is preparing (according to sources internal to the Italian manufacturer) to inaugurate a new production line dedicated to its future electric models. The firm has already bought new land near its historic factory, in order to install its future assembly lines.
Furthermore, a new research center dedicated to batteries would also be created in the process, still on the Maranello site. This information should be confirmed during a conference given on June 16.
A new electric model for 2025
If Ferrari plans to launch a few more thermal models, including the Purosangue expected for several years now, the Italian firm is indeed preparing an electric car. It will however be necessary to show a little more patience, since this one will not arrive before 2025, as the former CEO of the manufacturer, John Elkann, had said.
For the time being, no details have yet been revealed about him, but he said that ” you can be sure it will be everything you dream of. Maranello engineers and designers will leave no room for chance in their history“. We just have to see what Ferrari is preparing for us…
