It’s one of Netflix’s most popular series, but the platform just canceled its spin-off without telling us.

In development for several months, the series “The Sparrow Academy”, derived from “The Umbrella Academy”, will not see the light of day on Netflix.

The little world of Netflix was shaken last week, after the publication of an article in the magazine Rolling Stone which highlights the multiple accusations made against Steve Blackman.

The showrunner of The Umbrella Academy, in particular, has received numerous complaints against him for having engaged in toxic and manipulative behavior during the writing of the series, leading to harassment and even retaliation. Twelve former writing colleagues have testified against him.

While Blackman has defended himself against all of these attacks through his lawyer, Netflix has not spoken out on the subject. But Rolling Stone’s detailed investigation allows us to learn new things about two series projects he was working on that will therefore not see the light of day: the adaptation of the video game Horizon Zero Dawn and the spin-off of The Umbrella Academy, centered on the Sparrow Academy.

Goodbye sparrows

The characters of the Sparrow Academy were introduced in 2022, in season 3 of Umbrella Academy. Our favorite characters had indeed found themselves in an alternate reality where Professor Hargreeves had replaced them with much better students, particularly detestable: Marcus Hargreeves (Justin Cornwell), Ben (Justin H. Min), Fei (Britne Oldford), Alphonso (Jake Epstein), Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), Jayme (Cazzie David), and the cube Christopher.

Netflix

Netflix had announced that it was working on this spin-off in 2023, without really knowing if it would see the light of day. Steve Blackman, who signed a $50 million deal with the platform, was supposed to look into it with his armada of screenwriters.

But it is clear that the showrunner did not get the green light. Because of the accusations against him? At this stage, we cannot say. Especially since last year, the American giant had reserved an identical fate for Six of Crows, the spin-off of Shadow and Bone. It could be a simple budgetary strategy…

In any case, this is very bad news for fans of The Umbrella Academy who will have to console themselves with the fourth and final season of the series expected on Netflix on August 8. And after that, they will have to say goodbye for good to these superheroes like no other.
