Tyler Perry’s film, which is part of what is called the “soft porn” genre, is an erotic thriller starring singer and actress Kelly Rowland.

In this feature film not recommended for those under 16, the star plays Mea Harper, a criminal lawyer who must choose between her family, her duty and the threat of her own desires when she takes on an artist’s case accused of murdering his girlfriend.

Between desire and revenge, Mea Culpa mixes breathtaking investigation, sensual scenes and bloody twists for two hours (!) until an explosive and unexpected finale for the lawyer, torn between her desires, her work and her loved ones.

What to understand from the end of Mea Culpa?

While tasked with defending him, Mea succumbs to the charms of Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), the charming painter accused of murdering his missing girlfriend. The lawyer believed that her husband Kal (Sean Sagar) had cheated on her and decided to take revenge by sleeping with Zyair, who nevertheless seems guilty of the crime of which he is accused.

But she finally understands that Kal was taking care of Azalia (Kerry O’Malley), his sick mother, with his brother Ray (Nick Sagar), who makes the rain and the beauty in this family. Between conflicts of interest and family problems, Mea decides to run away and goes on vacation to the Dominican Republic after leaving her husband and her lover and client. But there she discovers that the girlfriend Zyair supposedly killed is alive and well.

Mea therefore returns to her family to understand what is going on. And she discovers that her brother-in-law Ray wanted revenge on Zyair because he had an affair with his wife Charlise (Shannon Thornton), whose portrait he painted as for all his conquests.

When Mea confronts Ray, she realizes that not only is her brother-in-law a psycho, but so is her mother-in-law Azalia. Mea and Charlise try to escape, but Azalia kills Charlise and Ray chases Mea in a car, which ends up hitting her husband Kal, who came to join them. Ray is finally arrested, Mea is safe and Zyair is free and exonerated.

Do Mea and Zyair end up together?

For this new film, screenwriter, actor and director Tyler Perry, who starred in Don’t Look Up, another big Netflix hit, wanted to have fun by taking inspiration from “older thrillers” of the 1980s and 1990s. “It was fun to explore the best and worst of humanity through the genre of an exotic thriller”he explained to Tudum.

Tyler Perry also had fun with the ending of Mea Culpa and even confided that he had slipped some hidden details into the film and suggests that the public watch the feature film several times to realize this and better understand the psyche of Mea’s in-laws, in particular.

“If you look at the mother and brothers, they are very vindictive people. They are not people who give up.”Tyler Perry told Today, “There was also a part that was cut from the movie. There was a bet between the brothers on whether Mea would fall in love with him or not.”.

Regarding the end of Mea Culpa, Tyler Perry has chosen a path of renewal for Mea: the lawyer will start a new life far from her husband and also without her lover Zyair, who nevertheless sought to see her again to build something with She.

“I think Mea decides she’s done with people for a while.”Tyler Perry said, “She is moving forward, just like Zyair, even if he misses her.” and I think Zyair continues but he misses her”.

For Trevante Rhodes, who plays Zyair, “this is probably the best ending” : “I think because it’s about the movie [de Kelly Rowland, qui est aussi productrice, ndlr]I think it’s what’s best for her.” The actor explains that the end of Mea Culpa is consistent with the story and reflects the psychological evolution of the main heroine.
