“It’s super surreal”: Duplantis pulverizes his own record

“It’s super surreal”
Duplantis pulverized own record

Pole vault star Armand Duplantis sets a grandiose world record final at the World Indoor Championships in athletics. The 22-year-old Olympic champion from Sweden beats his own world record, which is barely two weeks old. Other athletes also set new records in Belgrade on Sunday.

High-flyer Armand Duplantis brought the hall in Belgrade to a boil with his record jump, Lamont Marcell Jacobs and returnee Christian Coleman fought a gripping sprint duel, but the emotional highlight at the World Indoor Championships was Jaroslawa Mahuchich with gold “for the entire Ukrainian nation “.

Olympic champion Duplantis also easily secured the title in the pole vault. The 22-year-old Swede jumped the 6.20 meters in the third attempt and thus improved his own world record by one centimeter, which he had only set on March 7th in the Serbian capital. “It’s super surreal,” said Duplantis, who continues to “push boundaries.” Triple jumper Yulimar Rojas from Venezuela also surpassed her own record and flew 15.74 m to her third indoor title.

The day before, Mahuchich was also sure of the applause. The 20-year-old, who had traveled to Belgrade from the Ukraine for more than three days, won the indoor title with a world record of 2.02 m. “I didn’t think about doing it for myself or my medal,” said Mahutschich, who had already won Olympic bronze in Tokyo and World Championships silver in Doha. She did it for her country “to show that we are the strongest in the world”. Regulated training was hardly possible because of the Russian attack on their country. But in Belgrade, Mahuchich defied all odds.

Gold also went to Olympic champion Jacobs. The Italian won the heart-stopping final against 100m world champion Coleman over 60m by a razor-thin margin. In the end, the two competitors, who now jointly lead the world annual list with 6.41 seconds, were only separated by three thousandths. “The next milestone” are the World Championships in Eugene/Oregon (July 15th to 24th) and the European Championships in Munich (August 15th to 21st), announced Jacobs. Coleman, on the other hand, emphasized that he was slowly “getting back into his rhythm”. The American only made his comeback in January after an 18-month doping ban.

DLV gets nothing

The German Athletics Association (DLV), which competed with a rump team, went away empty-handed. Among other things, Malaika Mihambo had decided not to participate. In the absence of the Olympic champion, Serbian Ivana Vuleta won the long jump and replaced Mihambo at the top of the world annual best list with 7.06 meters.

Aleksandar Askovic set his personal best over 60 meters (6.61 seconds) in the same heat as Coleman, but the Munich man was eliminated in the semifinals. The same happened to Gregor Traber (7.67/Tübingen) over 60 meters hurdles, in whose run the eventual winner Grant Holloway (USA) set his own world record with 7.29 seconds. Sprinter Gina Lückenkemper (7.33 / Berlin) was already over in the lead-up.

In the shot put, Sara Gambetta (Halle/Saale) with 18.17 m and Katharina Maisch (LV Erzgebirge/17.83 m) in ninth and eleventh place missed the final of the top eight. At the Duplantis air show, Oleg Zernikel (Landau) was ninth (5.75 meters), Torben Blech was 13th and last (5.60 meters).
