Anne Hathaway revisits her career with nostalgia and emotion in a lovely video published by our colleagues at Vanity Fair. She returns in particular to her meeting with Julie Andrews in “Princess despite herself”.
Unforgettable interpreter of Mary Poppins for Walt Disney and Maria in The Sound of Music by Robert Wise, British actress Julie Andrews can also boast of having accompanied the first steps of a future star on the big screen: Anne Hathaway in the comedy family Princess Despite Herself, released 23 years ago.
In this modern tale produced by Disney studios, the young actress played Mia Thermopolis, a shy American student whose existence radically changed the day her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, sovereign of the distant kingdom of Genovia, came to tell her that she was the rightful heir to his throne.

A golden opportunity for the budding actress to make her debut alongside the legendary Julie Andrews (since it was obviously she who lent her features to the queen), and a wonderful filming memory for the famous actress who has become Anne Hathaway.
Thus, it was with tears in her eyes, her voice troubled by emotion, that she recently spoke of this unforgettable experience, at the microphone of Vanity Fair :
“I was 17 when we made this film, and so I hadn’t met a lot of people in my life yet”she said.
“It’s really moving to see that again.”
“I knew that Gary Marshall [le réalisateur] was very special and so was Julie Andrews. But today, sitting here and looking back at it all (…)I think they are two of the most magical people I have ever met.”
“This is the film that changed my life”continues Anne Hathaway. “It’s really strange to see it again today when I haven’t watched it in maybe 20 years, and it leaves me a little speechless, it’s really moving to see it again.”
The actress who, since then, has played in such popular feature films as The Devil Wears Prada, The Dark Knight Rises, Les Misérables and Interstellar, is therefore far from having forgotten the feature film that revealed:
“I’m really proud to be in this film, I’m happy to be this young girl.”
