It’s the new Frozen: info, release, casting… Everything you need to know about Wish, the Disney of Christmas!

It’s the Disney of Christmas! Everything we know about “Wish – Asha and the Lucky Star”, the new film from the creators of “Frozen”.

Disney is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. For the occasion, the studio is releasing in theaters an original film full of magic entitled Wish – Asha and the Good Star.

For their sixty-second feature film, Walt Disney takes us into a fantastical kingdom for a great adventure filled with colors, magic and songs. Everything you need to know about this animated film while waiting for Frozen 3.

What is Wish – Asha and the Lucky Star about?

Directed by Chris Buck, co-director of Frozen 1 and 2, and Fawn Veerasunthorn, the film follows Asha, an idealistic and quick-witted 17-year-old girl who lives in Rosas, a fantasy kingdom located off the coast of the Iberian Peninsula and in which literally every wish can come true.

In a moment of despair, she sends a sincere and powerful wish to the stars to which a cosmic force will respond: a small ball of infinite energy named Star. Together, Star and Asha will face the most formidable of enemies, King Magnifico, and prove that the wish of a determined person, combined with the magic of the stars, can truly produce miracles.

Produced and co-written by Jennifer Lee, screenwriter and co-director of Frozen 1 & 2, now creative director of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Wish – Asha and the Lucky Star should include many nods to previous works from the studio.

A tribute film with many winks

The trailer (visible above) makes it clear: this “story” has been “a century in the making”.

During an interview given to the Spanish site Ecartelera, Jennifer Lee admitted that Wish hid many references to other Disney animated films. However, these were not to the detriment of history.

“I can’t reveal all the easter eggs, but I will say that the priority was the narrative. Then we had the opportunity to add certain elements to the script because they fit the narrative, and others were the fruit of the work of the animators” she declares.

And from the launch of the trailer, fans had fun pointing out the more or less blatant easter eggs. So, Asha makes her wish by the wishing well which is a direct reference to Snow White’s wish and the sequence “I’m Wishing“. When Asha looks at the sky we see a star shining brighter than the others, a shot similar to that of the film The Princess and the Frog, when Tiana speaks to the star Evangeline.

Wishes at Disney

As you will have understood, the film contains many references to previous films from the century-old studio, whether it be the story or simple nods.

The very subject of the feature film, namely, the fulfillment of wishes, is a theme dear to the studio and links the films together, from Snow White to Pinocchio via The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and The princess and the Frog.

The title “When we pray to the lucky star“, taken from Pinocchio, has even become a real symbol for the studio since the first notes of the music composed by Leigh Harline accompany the studio logo before each film.

The music of Wish – Asha and the lucky star is composed by Dave Metzger, who notably worked on Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen and Moana. 7 original songs were written and composed by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, including the title “This wish”, which we hear in the trailer.

Who are the voices of Wish?

Ariana DeBose, winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, lends her voice to the heroine in the original version.

Chris Pine recently starring in Don’t Worry Darling and Dungeons & Dragons: Thieves’ Honor doubles as King Magnifico, Alan Tudyk – who has already lent his voice to Tuk Tuk in Raya and the Last Dragon and Iago in Aladdin by Guy Ritchie, doubles the goat with the velvet voice Valentino.

Actor Evan Peters doubles Simon while Angelique Cabral lends her voice to Queen Amaya. For his part, Victor Graber doubles Sabino and Harvey Guillén is Gabo.

Wish – Asha and the lucky star will be released in our theaters on November 29, the ideal gift from Disney to spectators. A little extra if you go to see the film at the Grand Rex, the animated film will be preceded by the show La Féérie des eaux.
