Ivory Coast eliminates Senegal on penalties

Drafted from the group stages, the Elephants accomplished a miracle by qualifying on penalties for the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) in Ivory Coast. The Ivorians converted all their shots on goal, while Senegalese Moussa Niakhaté sent his to Yahia Fofana’s right post. The vice-captain of the host country team, Franck Kessié, signed the victory by converting the last penalty.

Humiliated by Equatorial Guinea on Monday January 22 (0-4) then miraculously qualified after Morocco’s victory against Zambia (1-0) on Wednesday January 24, the Elephants experienced a tumultuous competition with the resignation of their coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, then the possible arrival, ultimately aborted, of Hervé Renard.
