- In the Charleston final, Belinda Bencic lost the repeat of last year’s final against Ons Jabeur 6:7 (6:8), 4:6.
- The Swiss starts the game better, towards the end of the first set the momentum turns.
- Only minutes before Bencic had to play the semi-final against Jessica Pegula (7: 5, 7: 6 (7: 5)).
It was a magic stroke that steered the game in different directions. Ons Jabeur parried Belinda Bencic’s backhand to the body and returned the ball between his legs. The Tunisian refined the subsequent backhand into a winner – and thus equalized the game again to 5:5. Because this scene happened at Breakball Jabeur.
After that the game was different, Jabeur turned up the heat and played excellent tennis at times. When the score was 6:5, Jabeur initially missed 5 set balls. In the tie-break, she subsequently fended off 2 set balls from Bencic, only to then strike herself with her 6th opportunity. For the Swiss, the tie-break was a rollercoaster of emotions (see video below).
Break festival in the 2nd round
The 2nd set started with 5 service breaks in the first 6 games. Only Jabeur got her serve through. In the meantime, Bencic was 1:4 behind, but caught himself and subsequently had breakballs to make it 5:5.
But nothing helped. Jabeur finally crowned herself with her 2nd tournament ball and after one hour and 59 minutes she became the Charleston winner. It is a successful revenge for the 28-year-old: last year the final pairing was the same – with the better ending for the 2-year-old Swiss.
