Bad news for French cinema. Actor and director Jacques Perrin has died, his family told AFP. He was 80 years old.

It is a great name of French cinema who has just disappeared: Jacques Perrin is dead, this Thursday, April 21. It was the director’s family who announced the sad news to Agence France Presse: “The family has the immense sadness to inform you of the disappearance of the filmmaker Jacques Perrin, who died on Thursday April 21 in Paris. He passed away peacefully at the age of 80, is it written in the press release. Discreet about his private life, he was the father of three boys : Mathieu Simonet, born in 1975, Maxence Perrin, born in 1995, and Lancelot Perrin, born in 1999.

Born on July 13, 1941, comedy was not an unknown world for Jacques Perrin. His father, Alexandre Simonet, was a stage manager at the Comédie-Française and then prompter at the Théâtre national populaire de Jean Vilar, and his mother, Marie Perrin was an actress. During his career, this member of the Academy of Fine Arts since 2019 and Commander of the Legion of Honor had put on multiple hats: director, producer, actor, or documentary narrator.

Jacques Perrin: “Actor is one of the most beautiful ways to live, all the same!”

Jacques Perrin toured with the greatest directors like Costa-Gavras, Bertrand Tavernier, Jacques Demy or Gérard Oury. He got his first major film role in 1968 in The girl with the suitcase by Valerio Zurlini. He also appeared in The Demoiselles de Rochefort, Donkey Skin, Z. We also remember his role in The chorists by Christophe Barratier, who is none other than his nephew, and where he plays with his son, Maxence Perrin. He has become rarer in recent years in front of the camera. I have fewer offers. People may have thought that, since I was a producer, I no longer had the desire to act, when that is not true. I’m just doing something complementary”he confided in 2008 in the columns of Gala. And to add: “And I still have so much attraction, will, dream, I would even say that at times I might miss not being an actor. It’s one of the best ways to live, after all! Very recently, he was also in the cast of the film Goliath by Frédéric Tellier, released last March, alongside Pierre Niney, Gilles Lellouche and Emmanuelle Bercot.

Jacques Perrin had also distinguished himself in the world of the 7th art with the production of great documentariesTo the picture Microcosmos: The Grass Peoplereleased in 1997 and for which he won César for Best Producer. Viewers also owe him Himalayas: The Childhood of a Chief in 1999 or even The migrating people in 2001, a documentary in which he also participated as a director.
