If Daniel Craig’s James Bond had not met a disastrous fate, would the actor have been tempted to return to the 007 franchise and play the role for a 6th time? Maybe. And according to him, that’s why Bond had to die.
The death of James Bond in Dying Can Wait (2021), after having been seemingly immortal for decades, shocked many. But Daniel Craig didn’t want it any other way.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the actor explains, in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, that there were two main reasons for the disappearance of Bond in the film. “Two things, one for me and one for the franchise,” he clarified.
“I said, ‘Well, you have to start over again.’ So let’s kill my character and find another Bond and find another story. Start at 23, start at 25, start at 30.”
The 2nd reason was, meanwhile, a way to ensure that he could never return to the saga.
The other was so I could move on. I don’t want to go back to it. I guess I would be so lucky if they asked me to come back, but the thing is, I have to move on. The sacrifice he makes in the film was out of love, and there is no greater sacrifice. So that seemed like a good thing to end.
The actor previously decided to quit the role after Specter in 2015.”I finished this movie with a broken leg“, he told EW in 2019. He had to undergo surgery after injuring his knee while filming a fight scene alongside Dave Bautista. “I had to ask myself questions: was I physically capable of doing [un autre] or did I want to make another one? Because that phone call to your wife saying ‘I broke my leg’ is not pleasant.”
It was ultimately producers Barbara Broccoli and Michel G. Wilson who convinced him to come back one last time. “He felt at the end of the last movie that he was somehow done,” Barbara Broccoli previously told EW. “I said to him, ‘I don’t think you’re done, I think there’s still more to tell about your Bond story.’ Fortunately, he ended up accepting the idea.”
James Bond and Daniel Craig is therefore over. However, you can find the actor in another of his regular roles: that of Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Tale at Knives Out, the sequel to the highly acclaimed At Knives Out (2019) by Rian Johnson which will be released on November 23 on Netflix.
