Filming for “Superman” has begun. And that’s not the only surprise that director James Gunn announced.

“Superman” fans can rejoice: director James Gunn (57) has revealed that filming has begun on his next film. On February 29th, Superman Clark Kent’s birthday, the crew met for the first recordings. However, this scheduling was “coincidental and unplanned”.

Director shares a first look at the suit

Ontoan Instagram account James Gunn shared some impressions that give a foretaste of the project: He posted himself beaming in the middle of the team and said he was “overjoyed”. In another photo showing a detail of the new Superman suit, the director revealed that the originally planned title “Superman: Legacy” has changed. The new film will now simply be called “Superman”. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the movie ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I finished the final draft, it was clear that the title was ‘Superman,'” Gunn wrote on his post, which included a close-up shot of the red, yellow and blue Superman suit with the famous “S”-like logo can be seen.

Based on the original film

The title change and the snow in the teaser image allow for some comparisons to the original 1978 film starring the late Christopher Reeve (1952-2004). This film, also simply called “Superman”, showed the superhero in a snowy and arctic hideout commonly known as the “Fortress of Solitude”, where Superman went to learn more about his origins and played with his father by Marlon Brando (1924-2004, to communicate.

It remains to be seen what exactly the plot of the new film will be. But James Gunn has already explained that it is will not be an origin story, but that it’s about “balancing Superman’s Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”

David Corenswet will be the new Superman

The previously less well-known actor David Corenswet (30) takes on the main role, “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan (33) plays Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (34) plays the villain Lex Luthor. The new “Superman” is scheduled to hit theaters in July 2025.
