James Middleton: Duchess Kate's brother owes it to his dogs

Duchess Kate's brother, James Middleton, has now explained how his dogs helped him fight depression.

Duchess Kate's (38) brother, James Middleton, 33, speaks openly about how his dogs have helped him through some of the "troubled times" in his life. In particular, he owes a lot to his black Cocker Spaniel bitch Ella in the fight against his depression. He has now posted the relevant excerpt from the BBC program "Sunday Morning Live" on Instagram.

His comment on the post: "I would even go so far as to say, 'Ella saved my life' – dogs don't just change lives … they save them." In the video itself he continues to rave about the four-legged friends: "They are a very, very loyal companion. For me they are the constant in troubled and good times." After receiving the diagnosis, his dog Ella always accompanied him to therapy sessions. "With her by my side, it became easier to understand that I had a mental illness," said Middleton.

In early 2019, he made the disease public

In early 2019, James Middleton revealed in an emotional guest post in the British tabloid Daily Mail that he was suffering from severe depression. "It's a disease, a cancer of the mind," wrote Middleton. He dragged himself to work during the day, only "to stare with glassy eyes at a computer screen". He had hoped that the hours would pass so that he could go home again, the 31-year-old continued. He went public with his illness to do something about the stigma that still clings to it, he wrote at the time.
