In December 2020, Jan Hofer resigned as chief spokesman for the “Tagesschau”. With his wife Phong Lan, he has now fulfilled a dream: a second home on Mallorca.
On December 14, 2021, Jan Hofer, 71, presented the “Tagesschau” for the last time in 35 years – the end of an era. But the newscaster hasn’t got bored since then. Since August 2021 he has been moderating the news journal “RTL Direkt”, which is broadcast live from Berlin, in alternation with Pinar Atalay, 43. In spring 2021 he also swung the dance floor at the side of Christina Luft, 31, in “Let’s Dance” and took eighth place.
Now he has fulfilled a long-awaited dream: a second home on Mallorca. In an interview with “Bild”, the newscaster now talks about his family life under the Mallorcan sun.
Jan Hofer: “We have changed our lives”
The 71-year-old is currently in a long-distance relationship with his wife Phong Lan Hofer, 43, as he spends most of the month in Berlin. His wife and their son Henry, 5, who recently started school at the international school in Palma, are staying on Mallorca. “We have changed our lives and made a conscious decision to use Mallorca as our second home. In Berlin I work around the clock, I hardly have any time for the family,” he told “Bild”.
The family has breakfast together every morning via video call and Jan Hofer spends as much time as possible at his second home: “In Palma we live in the middle of the city, with a view of the harbor. My wife gave up her job and takes care of things Henry. In my week off, I’m fully there for the family. “
You have settled in well
Jan Hofer also reveals that the entire family feels right at home in their second home. Little Henry was learning Catalan in addition to English and Mandarin, of course. And Phong Lan is also attending a Spanish course. “We are fully immersed in Spanish life“, sums up Jan Hofer.
