Jan Hofer will retire on December 14th. Now he has told what you deserve as a spokesman for the "Tagesschau".

The current chief spokesman for the Tagesschau, Jan Hofer (68), will retire on December 14th after 35 years with his last broadcast at 8 p.m. In the podcast "Decision makers meet Haider" from the "Hamburger Abendblatt" he has now explained to editor-in-chief Lars Haider, among other things, what one deserves as a spokesman for the Tagesschau.

There are different programs

"I have a post. (…) We all have a post," explains Hofer. In addition, one is paid per shipment, since the position itself is not particularly well paid. "It's such a backup," a "social parachute, if you will," Hofer explains. "That's just not enough." For a main edition of the Tagesschau there will be around 260 euros. "That's the highest paid."

But could one live from the income as a spokesman for the "Tagesschau" alone? "Yes", Hofer replies without further ado. You do an average of three to four programs a day. "Of course, none of them get paid that high." There is also the case, for example, that you only get a total of 300 euros for six hours on a Saturday morning. At the end of the month they then "made a few programs" that were sometimes better and sometimes worse paid. You couldn't get rich with it. However, Hofer "really doesn't want to complain. I've been able to live really well from it for my entire life." The fee is that of a "well-paid employee"

First time three weeks vacation

Hofer goes on to say: "I am not paid for being in front of the camera for 15 minutes at 8 p.m. Rather, I am paid for being there 365 days, 24 hours a day, publicly for the 'Tagesschau'." There is little free time in the job. "It was also the first time this year that I took a three-week vacation because something always came up."
