Saturday January 1, 2022, Jane Birkin gave an interview to the Journal du Dimanche. In full promotion of the documentary Jane by Charlotte, the actress agreed to make some secrets about her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg.
It was in 1968 … On the set of the movie Slogan, it was at the age of 22 that Jane birkin met Serge Gainsbourg. Already mother of a little Kate, born April 8, 1967 from her marriage to the English composer John Barry, it was July 21, 1971 that she gave birth to Charlotte Gainsbourg. While she has never had a second child with each of the three men in her life, it is in the columns of the Sunday Newspaper that she explained: “It wouldn’t have been fair to the first one, Kate. With his father, John Barry, the question did not arise since we quickly separated. Then, with Serge and then with Jacques Doillon, I didn’t want the number to make a difference with Kate.“
The actress took advantage of this interview to explain: “Likewise, I did not want to impart religious instruction to them. To the chagrin of my mother, all excited at Lou’s birth, because Jacques was a Protestant.“While the actress gave Charlotte Gainsbourg a middle name only, she explained to her daughter during this interview:”I wanted to call you Lucy, but Serge thought it didn’t sound good in French. He preferred Charlotte. He won, but I imposed Lucy behind.“In 2017, it is in the columns of World that Jane Birkin had mentioned her meeting with the singer. “I found him complicated, arrogant, during the filming. He was not kind to me; it made me very uncomfortable (…) But in the end, it was a treat. Funny, charming, considerate “, she confided, before adding: “In one evening, the character had changed dramatically and I had fallen in love with him.“
Why did Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg separate?
If the couple lived years of happiness, it was in 1980 that the actress left the singer. And for good reason, the latter could no longer bear its many excesses. In an interview, Serge Gainsbourg recognized: “Jane left through my fault, I was doing too much abuse, I came home completely freaked out, I beat her up. When she yelled at me, I didn’t like it: two seconds too long and bang … She went through it with me, but then it became an eternal affection …“
