January 2023 registrations: the rise in the market confirmed by the electrification of the vehicle fleet


Despite a rebound in the last quarter, 2022 will have been a dark year for vehicle registrations on the French market with a drop of 7.83%. The fault mainly with a complicated economic situation.

Beyond Covid-19, “a succession of crises” was responsible for this dark period, said François Roudier, the communication manager of the Automotive Platform (PFA). The market, which has fallen “by a third of volume since 2019”suffered the “semiconductor crisis, war in Ukraine, difficulties in delivering vehicles due to lack of drivers, increased material costs and overpriced fuel”, he explains. Added to this is the wait-and-see attitude of French people affected by inflation, who, to reduce the impact on their budget, are hesitating between a new car and a second-hand vehicle. Another factor of uncertainty is the acceleration of the establishment of numerous ZFEs (Low Emission Zones) in large cities.

Global electrification is accelerating, pure electric is slowing down

However, 2023 starts with a bang with renewed growth of 8.8% compared to N-1 and 111,940 registrations. Although the economic situation remains very difficult, some of the issues mentioned above are being resolved, particularly those affecting the semiconductor crisis.

Stellantis and Renault share the bulk of the pie with respectively 31.6% and 26.5% market share. As for brands, Peugeot, Citroën, Renault and Dacia act as figureheads. Among other manufacturers, Toyota is doing well with 6.9% market share.

In a market with growing electrification, pure thermal power remains the majority with 38.7% market share. On the other hand, diesel continues its descent into limbo with 11.2%. This is replaced by hybrid vehicles which represent a combined 32.5% of the market with an interesting distribution of 15.3% for the classic hybrid, 7.9% for the mild hybrid and 9.2% for the plug-in hybrid. All-electric confirms its penetration with 13.1% market share, but there is a significant decline compared to October and December 2022, since its share had risen to 15% and 16% respectively.

Apart from this top 10, we note some interesting information. Thus, the Renault Arkana is positioned in 11th place, and the Renault Austral, just marketed and which we will publish the test very soon, is already in 17th place, just behind the Dacia Duster. The first electric, the Dacia Spring, is 13th when the Model Y and Model 3 are only 63rd and 80th.
