Japan has deployed fighter jets after a Chinese military aircraft “violated” its airspace, the defense ministry said Monday. It was “confirmed that a Chinese aircraft violated territorial airspace off the Danjo Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture between approximately 11:29 a.m. and 11:31 a.m.,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that it had “urgently scrambled fighter jets.”
A first incursion
The “Y-9 spy plane” entered Japanese airspace at 11:29 a.m. for about two minutes, the ministry added. Local media, including public broadcaster NHK, said the incident marked the first incursion by a Chinese military aircraft into Japanese airspace. Japanese and Chinese vessels have been involved in incidents in the past over disputed areas, including the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, also known as the Diaoyu Islands by Beijing.
The island chain has fueled diplomatic tensions and been the scene of clashes between Japanese coast guard vessels and Chinese fishing boats.
