TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s defense ministry will deploy an anti-aircraft defense unit to Japan’s westernmost island of Yonaguni near Taiwan, the Jiji news agency reported on Tuesday.

The deployment of the troops is part of a plan to expand Japanese ground forces on the island in Okinawa Prefecture to bolster the defense of Japan’s southwestern islands, the carrier said. word of the ministry, Takeshi Aoki, quoted by Jiji.

Japan unveiled in December a plan to strengthen its military capabilities to the tune of 320 billion dollars (300.16 billion euros), the highest since the Second World War.

It plans to buy missiles capable of hitting China, as regional tensions and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine fuel war fears.
