If you scroll through Instagram, you’ll notice one thing in the social media bubble: a special head massage, during which you are sprayed with jets of water, is currently extremely hyped. This is the new wellness and massage trend from Japan and it is called “Head Spa”. What’s behind it? We got to the bottom of THE hype from Asia.

Head Spa: What’s behind the trend treatment?

As the name suggests, a head spa focuses on the head. Dry and oily hair should be brought back into balance and the application should ensure healthy and shiny hair. The scalp should be cared for and hair growth should also be stimulated. The aim is to remove sebum and residue from styling products and improve the health of the scalp. A break for body and mind.

Water jet installation with massage effect

During the treatment you relax on a lounger and rest your head on a sink, similar to a hairdresser’s. Repeated head washing rituals also ensure relaxation, as does a water jet installation with a massage effect. That sounds like music to your ears. Relax and be pampered for an hour with a pleasant noise level – wonderful.

Japanese Head Spa: The Process

“My skin was first cleansed with a cleansing milk, my face, décolleté, shoulders, arms, hands and head were massaged with argan, olive and chamomile oil. Then I was given a mask for my face and my hair was shampooed and then a mask was worked into my hair with a special comb. A conditioner was applied to the ends of my hair and finally my face was massaged with a day cream,” explains BRIGITTE editor Lisa, who has already personally examined the trend .

What does a head spa really do? Expert explains

But what does a head spa really do for the scalp – apart from pure relaxation? We asked hairdresser and “Color and Care” expert Merret Pass. “The special massages can improve blood circulation, which means better nutrient absorption by the hair follicles. This can also have a positive effect on hair growth. In addition, the scalp is deeply cleaned with special products and problems such as quickly greasy hair or dandruff can be improved. The “Various massages have a relaxing effect and the hair structure can improve through cleaning and intensive care,” says the expert.

Your hair will thank you for this extensive care, because who cares about their hair for so long? “The fact that the head spa spends 60-90 minutes stimulating and caring for the scalp, I would say that is the biggest difference. Most head massages, for example at the hairdresser, are often shorter and they are very rarely done at home “It’s about proper care of the scalp, but more about the hair itself.”

Is the head spa trend here to stay?

At around 110 to 150 euros, the price in most studios such as Dermastil in Hamburg or Zoi Concepts in Heidelberg is proud. But if you want to treat yourself, your hair and your scalp to something very special and want to grow your mane quickly and effectively, this trend is definitely in the right place.
