Japanese mourn former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

NARA, Japan, July 9 (Reuters) – Many Japanese went to the scene on Saturday where former prime minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed in the western city of Nara on Friday.

The former prime minister was assassinated while delivering a campaign speech for the senatorial elections on Sunday.

“I’m so shocked that this kind of thing is happening in Nara,” said Natsumi Niwa, a 50-year-old stay-at-home mom who came to lay a wreath with her 10-year-old son at the scene.

The campaign for the senatorial elections resumed on Saturday. The ruling coalition, led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida who was Shinzo Abe’s right-hand man, is expected to win the election.
