To remedy the accumulation of electronic waste, JBL is launching a platform for the resale and purchase of second-hand products between individuals. The firm presents it by recalling various figures relating to electronic pollution: according to Ademe, each French person would generate around 9 kg of electronic waste per year and would have on average 11 devices stored without being used.
This platform, called Second Chance, works like Leboncoin or Vinted, unlike where you do not receive money but a voucher to be used on the JBL online store equivalent to the sale price plus 20 %. The site provides a resale price estimation tool as shown in the screenshot below. According to the example, JBL estimates that a Charge 5 in very good condition and with charging cable is worth €150. If you manage to sell it at that price, JBL will therefore pay you a voucher of 180 € to be worth on its shop. But there is a catch: this voucher is only valid from a minimum purchase. In the case of our example, the €180 voucher can only be spent if your basket reaches €334.
This system of reimbursement by vouchers can however raise questions, because receiving a voucher rather than money inevitably encourages consumption and therefore goes against what Second Chance was created for in first place.
Beyond connecting individuals, the platform provides an opportunity for JBL to market the huge stock of demonstration products used in-store. These products are indeed quite functional and were until now simply thrown in the trash once their modeling career was over.
Second Chance is now accessible via the JBL website and initially only offers mobile Bluetooth speakers (Flip 6, Xtreme 3, Go 3, etc.). JBL has however assured us that it does not exclude the opening of this platform to other types of products, such as headphones or sound bars.
