Jean-Jacques Beineix, director and writer particularly recognized in the 1980s, died at the age of 75 following a serious illness. The news was announced by his family to AFP.
From his first film, “Diva”, in 1980, the director met with success. Several films will continue to mark his work, including “The moon in the gutter”, “37°2 in the morning”, “IP 5 – The island of pachyderms”. Yves Montand had died during this last shoot, as our colleagues from Parisian remind us.
In 2020, Hélène de Fougerolles, actress in “Mortel Transfer”, had also expressed herself in their columns: “He was very demanding. But also very emotional while trying to hide it. There has been a shift in cinema that has changed things. And that a director today must accept certain conditions. Soften up. Jean-Jacques probably didn’t take that turn. It’s hard to know that someone with so much talent can’t express themselves.”
A FIRST NOVEL PUBLISHED IN 2020
His name has often been linked to those of Besson and Blier. Together, they were considered the three Bs. Beyond cinema, Jean-Jacques Beineix was also present in the literary field.
In 2020, his first novel, “Le Toboggan”, had been published. He tackled the questions of childhood or even the passage of time and loneliness. He had previously attempted to adapt Pierre Lemaître’s 2013 novel “Goodbye up there”, but the project ultimately failed. His death leaves the world of culture in mourning.

Revealed to the general public in 1986 for having played the role of Betty in “37°2 in the morning”, an impulsive and uncontrollable young woman, actress Béatrice Dalle was quick to react to salute the memory of the deceased director.

On a post published on the social network Instagram, the 57-year-old actress posted a snapshot of Jean-Jacques Beineix, in profile and with one eye screwed to the camera.
“Zorg (the other central character of the film, played by Jean-Hugues Anglade, Editor’s note) and Betty are orphans. One of the most beautiful pages of my life has just turned … I love you”, she wrote in ultimate tribute.
