The world of cinema is in mourning. Jean Jacques Beineix died on Thursday, January 13, at the age of 75 following a long illness, as confirmed by his family, this Friday, January 14, to AFP. The director and writer enjoyed great success in the 1980s, notably with the film 37°2 in the morning which revealed Béatrice Dalle and Jean-Hugues Anglade. This film, prohibited for children under 18 when it was released in theaters in 1986, however gathered more than 3.5 million French people in dark rooms. With 8 nominations at the César ceremony in 1987 and even an Oscar nomination the same year, Jean-Jacques Beineix’s film is considered a cult film from the 1980s.

Jean-Jacques Beineix had moved away from the cinema in recent years. Indeed, his last film, Deadly transfer, dates from 2001. More recently, the former director had released a documentary for television, staged a show for the theater and even write a black novel, Toboggan, released in 2020, published by Michel Laffont. He also published his autobiography in 2006.

Emmanuelle Béart on Jean-Jacques Beineix: “He was very demanding”

In 2020, in the columns of our colleagues from Paris, Emmanuelle Béart, who toured with Jean-Jacques Beineix in Deadly transfer in 2001, confided in the director. “He was very demanding. But also very emotional while trying to hide it. There has been a turn in the cinema that has changed things. And that a director today must accept certain conditions . To soften.
