In 2018, after the publication by Radio France of an investigation suspecting overbilling during the presidential campaign of candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the latter attacked journalists from Franceinfo. Justice has just condemned the member of France Insoumise to a fine and damages.

“Assholes”, “liars”, “cheaters”. It is with a chosen vocabulary that the tribune of France Insoumise had qualified in 2018 the journalists of Franceinfo in a video. Jean-Luc Mélenchon had also invited his supporters to “rot them wherever they could”. This video followed an investigation published by the investigation unit of Radio France. This investigation suspected overbilling during the candidate’s presidential campaign in 2017.

3,000 euros in damages

The investigation was relayed by Franceinfo and Jean-Luc Mélenchon then reacted in a video posted on his Facebook account. He also accused Franceinfo of being a state radio station that obeyed the executive. Following this video Radio France had lodged a complaint.

The Paris Criminal Court has just ruled: the deputy for rebellious France is sentenced to a fine of 500 euros suspended for public insult and defamation. He will also have to pay 3,000 euros in damages to Radio France. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s lawyer announced that his client would appeal this decision.
