Jean Rochefort: how he experienced his late fatherhood with his daughter Clémence

He would undoubtedly have liked to enjoy his fatherhood more. In 1992, when he was already the father of four children from three relationships, Jean Rochefort welcomed little Clémence. The fruit of his love affair with Françoise Vidal, twenty years his junior, the little girl was born when her father was already in his sixties. Before disappearing on October 9, 2017, the actor maintained a unique relationship with his youngest daughter, but which was no less strong, as she herself explained to Gala.fr in 2022: “I was well aware that he was older than my friends’ other fathers when he picked me up from school. He was getting older and didn’t hide it. But I could see that, compared to other fathers, there was no time to lose“, she says.

Jean Rochefort is of the same opinion. Aware that he is not eternal, he wants to enjoy every moment with his offspring: “We knew we didn’t have time, so we went for it! What we wanted to do, we did it“, remembers Clémence Rochefort. “As he had me late, I also have the memory of a very attentive father. He didn’t want to bother me too much, but above all wanted to enjoy the present moment. When I was 16-17, we had more of a relationship like you might have with a friend or a grandfather. He was everything at the same time. It’s his age that gave me this relationship with him“, assures the actor’s daughter, before emphasizing: “He was aware that it was perhaps a little selfish to have children late but at the same time, he thought it was great. Our relationship was shorter but also more intense.”

Jean Rochefort “serene” about death, according to his daughter Clémence

In this same interview, Clémence Rochefort said more about the relationship that her late father had with death. “From a personal point of view, he was quite serene about death. Above all, he didn’t want to suffer or be dependent on those close to him. He also wanted to stay active until the end. Even if, obviously, he was afraid of hurting the people he loved…“, she told Gala.fr. His daughter, whom he had late, was also prepared for the actor’s departure: “It was still very painful, but it’s true that I was prepared for the idea. It wasn’t a sudden death like some children experience.“, explained the young woman, before continuing: “It was about old age. When I was 17, he was 80, I think I started preparing then. Something resonated with me somehow. For me, it was like a path of preparation and that’s probably why it was a little less difficult to live with, let’s say more calming.
