Tuesday October 4, 2022, Anne E. Schwartz, a criminal journalist who covered the Jeffrey Dahmer case, confided in The Independent on the inconsistencies between the Netflix series and reality.
Since its release on Wednesday, September 21 on Netflix, Jeffrey Dahmer’s series has known a worldwide success. And if the case fascinates because of the personality of the serial killer and the atrocious crimes he committed, a journalist involved in the case wanted to restore certain truths. This is Anne E. Schwartz, who worked in 1991 for the Milwaukee Journal.
In an interview with The Independentshe said:When people watch the program and say, ‘Oh my god, that’s horrible’, I’d like to tell them that it didn’t really happen that way.“. Indeed, she explained that the nauseating smell from Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment was actually not present. “I was a crime reporter for five years, so I know the smell of buildings that contain decomposed bodies. This was not the case here. It was a chemical smell” she remembered when she was one of the first people to be able enter the killer’s apartment.
The journalist returns to the attitude of neighbors and police
In addition to mentioning a bad reconstruction of certain facts, Anne E. Schwartz insisted on returning to certain characters present in the series, starting with the neighbor of the cannibal. “In the first minutes of the first episode, we see Glenda Cleveland knocking on her door. None of this ever happened” she explained. Indeed, Glenda Cleveland lived in a different building and his character was “merged” with that of the real neighbor of Jeffrey Dahmer.
Finally, the journalist decided to mention police behavior. If they are enormously singled out in the series, she wanted to recall that at the time, the situation was not so easy with the residents of the neighborhood. “I spent a lot of time with them, meeting people who were there. Again, this is an adaptation, but at that time it was not easy for the authorities to gain the trust of the inhabitants. This representation does not help matters” she pointed out. Many details that show that reality is much more complex than fiction.
