WHAT IS IT ABOUT ?

During a mission in Afghanistan, Lynsey, an army engineer, is injured by an explosive device. Suffering from brain damage, she returned to the United States. She then began a painful and slow recovery during which she relearned to walk and to use her memory, with the support of a caregiver.

When she returns home to New Orleans, she must deal with painful memories. Living with her mother despite their conflicting relationships, Lynsey wants only one thing: to find her job as an engineer. She then meets James Aucoin. Little by little, they support each other and keep each other company. James, too, suppresses his past.

Causeway, written by Ottessa Moshfegh and Luke Goebel, directed by Lila Neugebauer.

WELL WORTH A LOOK ?

In just a few years, Jennifer Lawrence has established herself as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Propelled by the success of The Hunger Games, she is, in 2016, the highest paid actress in the world. But after the semi-failures of Passengers, Red Sparrow and mother!, she became rarer, taking a break away from film sets.

If the comedy Don’t Look Up offered her a nice return in 2021, it is with Causeway that she plays one of her best roles for a long time. She turns again to independent cinema, which opened her arms to her in 2010 with Winter’s Bone, and trusts Lila Neugebauer, a young director who signs her first film here.

In this drama, she plays a female soldier returning to her hometown after being seriously injured in Afghanistan. First deprived of all autonomy, the young woman must regain control of her body before beginning a long convaslecence. The actress appears there more vulnerable than ever and in absolute restraint.

Bryan Tyree Henry and Jennifer Lawrence in “Causeway”.

Of great sobriety, this character forces Jennifer Lawrence to reveal another face and confirms that she has never been so interesting as in small productions. If she shines alone, it’s her chemistry, tender and authentic, with Bryan Tyree Henry that elevates this drama to a whole new level.

Carrier of a beautiful subject, Causeway nevertheless suffers from a rather slow rhythm. Conventional, it has the faults of a film too calibrated for the Oscars and struggles to excite beyond the quality of its performers.

Causeway by Lila Neugebauer is available on Apple TV+.
