An English football legend, Jimmy Greaves, died on Sunday morning. The former striker was “a giant of the sport”.

He was one of the best strikers in the world. On the morning of September 19, Jimmy Greaves (1940-2021) died at the age of 81, as his former club Tottenham Hotspur confirmed in an official statement. For the club alone, he scored a total of 266 goals in 379 games between 1961 and 1970. One is “extremely saddened” by the news of Greaves’ death. He was the top scorer six times between 1959 and 1969.

Greaves’ career began at Chelsea FC, who also developed from a “truly remarkable player” adopted. One of his greatest successes is certainly winning the World Cup in 1966, even if he did not play in the final against Germany. In 57 games he scored 44 goals for England.

Severe stroke in 2015

The former striker made public that he was an alcoholic in the 1970s but managed to beat the illness. In recent years he has had to struggle with health problems more and more. In 2015, the athlete suffered a severe stroke and has been in a wheelchair ever since.

Numerous clubs and football personalities said goodbye on social media. “Rest in Peace Jimmy Greaves”, tweeted Harry Kane (28). The deceased was “a real legend and one of the great goalscorer”. Gary Lineker (60) designated Greaves as “possibly the best striker this country has ever produced”. The English football icon was “a giant of the sport” as well as a “charismatic, knowledgeable, witty and warm-hearted man”.
