JK Rowling to donate over a million euros for children in Ukraine

The novelist relayed a call for donations on Twitter via the Lumos foundation, to help the thousands of children trapped in orphanages.

Britain’s JK Rowling, who wrote the famous Harry Potter children’s novel saga, has appealed for donations to help children trapped in orphanages in Ukraine, promising to raise up to £1million.

The novelist took to Twitter on an appeal launched through the Lumos foundation, which she co-founded in 2005 and which is currently raising funds to provide food, hygiene kits and medical kits to people affected by the humanitarian crisis. “I will personally match donations to this appeal, up to £1million”or about 1.2 million euros, wrote JK Rowling, thanking the donors on the social network.

Lumos explains on its website that it works in the region of Zhytomyr, west of the capital Kiev; a region where, before the Russian invasion, more than 1,500 children were in orphanages. About 100,000 children live in institutions in the country, says Lumos. ‘The invasion by Russian forces means more children are now at risk’warns the foundation, which wants to help children displaced and traumatized by the conflict.
