In a sea of white candles, the US presidential couple and the vice-presidential couple commemorated the 500,000 corona deaths in the US.

US President Joe Biden (78), First Lady Jill Biden (69), Vice President Kamala Harris (56) and her husband Douglas Emhoff (56) remembered the more than 500,000 corona victims in the USA on Monday evening in front of the White House. Countless white candles glowed on the steps of the official residence of the President of the United States.

More dead than in three wars

"Today marks a really dark, painful milestone – 500,071 dead," writes Joe Biden on Instagram. This means that more Americans died in one year from the pandemic, "than in World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War combined," it said. More people fell victim to this virus than in any other nation on earth. "The people we lost were extraordinary," said the US President.

Vice President Kamala Harris also posted a photo of the scenery on Instagram. "American families have lost more than 500,000 sons and daughters, mothers and fathers to Covid-19. Today and every day we remember them and fight for them," she wrote.

Dressed in dark clothes, with black masks, bowed heads and clasped hands, the two observed a minute's silence. Then a military band played the song "Amazing Grace".
