Now it's official: Joe Biden has won the election in the USA. Even Trump now sees his election defeat – more or less.

It's over: The US Congress has formally confirmed the election of Joe Biden (78) as the next President of the United States. Vice-President Mike Pence (61) announced the official final result at a meeting of the chambers. Pence said the count should be viewed as "a sufficient explanation" for Biden's victory, but did not congratulate the incoming administration. Trump supporters had previously stormed the Capitol, which is why the deliberations of Congress had to be interrupted for several hours.

Donald Trump (74) now also sees his electoral defeat – more or less. In a statement he promised an orderly handover, but also let it be known that he was "not at all" in agreement with the election result. "This may be the end of the greatest tenure in presidential history, but it is only the beginning of our struggle to make America great again!" According to the Washington Post, Trump is said to be in an unstable state, listen to only a few employees, hid in the White House and developed a "bunker mentality".

Meanwhile, several US media reports that high-ranking government officials are discussing removing Trump from office before January 20. This would be possible through the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution. This states, among other things, that a president can be removed if the vice-president and a majority in the cabinet are of the opinion that he is unable to exercise his office. Another possibility would be a renewed impeachment procedure.
