John Lennon: Beatles star's murderer apologizes to Yoko Ono

Mark David Chapman, who is behind bars for the murder of Beatles star John Lennon, apologized in a hearing with Yoko Ono.

John Lennon's (1940-1980) murderer has apparently apologized to Yoko Ono (87). As reported by "ABC News", among others, Mark David Chapman (65) is said to have said at a hearing that his murder of the singer was "despicable". At the hearing in New York on August 19, the 65-year-old was said to have been denied a release from prison because "this would be incompatible with the welfare of society". He had made the request for the eleventh time.

Chapman, who was then 25 years old, shot the Beatles star four times in Manhattan in December 1980. His wife Yoko Ono had to watch the crime. Chapman now apologized to the widow and said that he had killed the singer out of "self-importance". He also said his act was "despicable" and "gruesome".

"In search of self-importance"

According to the report, Chapman said of Lennon's murder, "I think it's the worst crime that can be done to an innocent man. He was extremely famous. I didn't kill him for his character. He was a family man. He was one Icon, I murdered him because he was very, very, very famous and that's the only reason and I was very, very, very, very looking for self-importance, very selfish, I want to add that and emphasize that very much. It was an extremely selfish act. " Chapman also said he was sorry for the pain he caused Yoko Ono. "I think about it all the time."
