Since losing his wife, Andrew Blake no longer has his heart for anything. A final impulse pushes him to leave London to return to France, to the property where he had met her.
This journey towards the memory of happy days is not going to go as planned at all… To stay at the Beauvillier estate, Blake finds himself condemned to playing butler on trial.
Enter Mme Beauvillier, the mistress of the house with behavior as strange as her relationships, Odile, the cook with a strong character, Philippe, the somewhat smitten steward who lives like a hermit at the bottom of the park, and Manon, the young cleaning lady whose destiny changes, Blake discovers people as lost as he is.

“Book and film are two distinct paths to reach the same place: deep within ourselves, where the truest part of us resides”, underlines Gilles Legardinier. The author also wrote the screenplay for the film, in collaboration with producer Christel Henon, for whom this is the first time.
