  • On March 23, 2023, John Wick returned to the big screen with lots of banging and plenty of action.
  • In the new film, the sympathetic assassin goes back into battle against the most powerful players in the underworld.
  • Movie 4 is the longest installment in the franchise so far and comes along with a few twists and a complex plot.

Recently, we’ve seen the return of actor Keanu Reeves in his role as suit-wearing hitman John Wick. “John Wick: Chapter 4” is not only the longest part of the franchise so far, but also offers its audience a fairly complex plot in addition to plenty of action and banging. In order to keep an overview here, we explain the end of the film and tell you whether the sympathetic assassin finally got his revenge campaign successfully ended.

In the latest chapter, the eponymous (anti)hero plunges into a global battle against the gangster organization “Die Hohe Kammer”. In order to finally get rid of the High Chamber, however, Wick must face his newest adversary, the Marquis de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård). In addition to a loyal canine companion, Reeves is supported by old acquaintances such as the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) and Winston, the manager of the Continental Hotel, who betrayed Wick in the previous film.

Eventually, as the film progresses, Wick comes to the point where he realizes that the High Chamber will not let go of him until he assumes the position of Marquis himself. However, this means a duel of life and death, because only one will walk away as a living winner.

However, cunning as Marquis de Gramont is, he summons Caine in his stead to fight Wick in battle. In the end, John Wick had to compete against his old friend. Although the duel really does take place and the friends shoot at each other, they also manage to use a ruse to kill the Marquis.

In the end, the whole drama seems to have ended well, because Wick has finally reached his goal. However, as he collapses, it becomes clear that our hero took many of Caine’s bullets over the multiple round duel. Enough to hunt down the sympathetic hero?

Indeed, a hard cut follows and the next thing we see is a tombstone with John Wick’s name engraved on it. So it seems like maybe Wick really succumbed to his injuries this time. Even the Bowery King shows up in the cemetery and finally bids farewell to his old friend.

But does this really point to the end of John Wick and possibly the film series of the same name? Maybe we shouldn’t be too sure here, because it wouldn’t be the first time the assassin has faked his own death. Maybe this time he just didn’t want to repeat his previous mistake and this time he took even more precautions to stage his own death and get rid of the High Chamber for good.

On the other hand, it is clear that the “John Wick” franchise is far from over. Although it is not yet certain whether we will get a 5th film, the film series is now being expanded with several film and series spin-offs. Also, the hidden post-credits scene of Part 4 also suggests that the story will continue in one way or another. Whether it’s starring or Keanu Reeves, we’re sure to see a lot more from the world of John Wick.
