Johnny Depp ‘tortured’ Leonardo DiCaprio on Gilbert Grape

The filming of “Gilbert Grape” was not easy for Johnny Depp, who revealed a few years ago to have “tortured” his young partner in the film, a certain Leonardo DiCaprio.

The feature film Gilbert Grape, released in theaters in 1994, tells the story of a man who assumes the responsibilities of the head of the family since the death of his father. In the title role, we find Johnny Depp, and in that of Arnie, his younger brother suffering from mental disorders, a certain Leonardo DiCaprio, for one of his first major roles on the screen.

In 2016, during the 31st Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Johnny Depp returned to the filming of Lasse Hallström’s film. The American actor, who was then already an international star after his roles in the series 21 Jump Street, Edward Scissorhands of Tim Burton and Arizona Dream, had not really tasted the experience…

“Shooting this film was difficult for me. I don’t know why”, said Johnny Depp on stage, according to the People site (comments reported by Entertainment Weekly). And the actor then talks about his collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio, 19 years old at the time.

“I tortured him. Really”he let go. “He was always talking about video games, you know? I was telling you it was a dark time! I was like, ‘No, Leo, I won’t let you pull on my cigarette when you’re in your mother’s back.”

The “torture” inflicted therefore seems rather light and without consequences despite the rather gloomy state of mind of Johnny Depp, especially since the latter really appreciated his collaboration with DiCaprio. “The truth is that I respect Leo a lot”he concluded. “He really worked hard on this film, spending a lot of time doing research. When he came on set, he was really ready to work hard, he was very prepared.”
