Jojoba oil for the face: benefits and uses

Vegetable oil with multiple virtues, jojoba oil is very interesting for facial care. Find out how to use it on all skin types!

Jojoba oil: a vegetable oil very useful in cosmetics

From jojoba, a shrub native to Central America that is mainly cultivated for the oil that can be extracted from its seeds, jojoba oil is a vegetable oil with many benefits for the skin and hair, and therefore for our beauty in general. But if it is so precious in the field of cosmetics – it is found in many facial treatments, it is indeed not uncommon for it to be included in the composition of a body cream or even that it is a star active ingredient in hair products – this is because its composition is at least original for a vegetable oil.

Of a composition very similar to that of sebum Naturally produced by the skin, jojoba oil is, in fact, very rich in unsaturated fatty acids and it also contains unsaponifiables. This peculiarity and the wonderful properties that its components give it, have earned it the pretty nicknames of "gold of the Incas" and "gold of the desert", the latter referring to the golden color jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is, in fact, a yellow oil whose fairly thick texture is rather similar to that of a wax; even if in commerce, it is found in a very liquid form. On the scent side, it has a fairly neutral and light scent that is however reminiscent of walnut or hazelnut. No wonder then that the jojoba shrub is also referred to as “wild hazelnut” on a few occasions.

Finally, this vegetable oil has the advantage of being stable and to keep well. An asset that allows us to easily integrate it into our beauty routine!

What are the benefits of jojoba oil on the skin?

Thanks to this particular composition, jojoba oil reveals properties that are very useful for all skin types. His unsaturated fatty acids (gadoleic acid, erucic acid, oleic acid) for example, ultimately act a bit like the sebum in the skin itself since they form a fatty film on its surface to protect it from dehydration. Jojoba oil thus has nourishing virtues very interesting for dry to very dry skin where it manages to compensate a little for the lack of sebum (just as it does for hair elsewhere). It is also suitable for the care of dehydrated skin because by rebuilding their hydrolipidic film, it slows down water loss from the skin.

But that does not prevent it from being also used by more capricious skins and even those prone to acne because it has the good idea to be non-comedogenic and to be endowed with regulatory properties. These characteristics therefore make it perfectly suited to the care of oily or combination skin, where it regulates sebum secretion without ever risking irritating or drying them out. In addition, if you are in this case, do not worry that it accentuates the shiny appearance of your skin (even momentarily) when you apply it on the face because although it is quite a vegetable oil. thick, it is not greasy and quickly penetrates the epidermis to leave a dry touch.

As to unsaponifiable present in this quality vegetable oil, they offer a protective action against skin aging by preserving the skin from external aggressions (in particular by helping to defend itself against UV rays), by allowing it to heal better and by preserving its reserve of elastin (a protein which ensures its flexibility and elasticity).

The cosmetic properties of this vegetable oil are therefore multiple on the skin of the body like that of the face, and the interest of its benefits on the epidermis of the face is undeniable regardless of the type of skin.

How to use jojoba oil on the face?

Jojoba oil can be used in a number of ways when it comes to taking care of your face.

Pure jojoba oil as a makeup remover

Jojoba oil is a product that is readily used as part of a natural oil-based makeup removal that gently dissolves makeup. Jojoba vegetable oil – which is hydrating, nourishing, regenerating, softening and sebum-regulating all at the same time – is even one of the best for removing makeup and cleansing the skin without stripping it if you want our opinion. Why ? Because it has the particular advantage of being suitable for all skin types (unlike other vegetable oils such as castor oil which are a little comedogenic), including oily or acne-prone skin which can use it as a makeup remover without fear that it will give them more breakouts. And because it offers a real facial treatment straight away in addition to being a pleasant make-up remover. Finally, using this mild oil as a makeup remover is also very easy!

The procedure :

  • take a few drops of jojoba oil in the palms of your hands
  • heat the amount of oil by rubbing your hands together
  • gently distribute the oil over the entire face by applying it with light pressure
  • massage your face with your fingertips in small circular movements, and focusing on the areas with the most makeup such as the eyes, cheekbones and lips, to allow the oil to capture makeup particles and impurities.
  • emulsify the oil with a little lukewarm water to help dissolve makeup residue
  • rinse thoroughly with clean water to properly rid the skin of the oil in which makeup particles and impurities are trapped

Pure jojoba oil as a treatment oil for the face

Thanks to its different beauty properties and the multiple care it provides to the skin, jojoba oil can also replace your daily moisturizer or your serums whether they are moisturizing, anti-aging, soothing or anti -oily skin. Once again, a few drops of this vegetable oil bursting with benefits is enough to provide effective (and 100% natural) treatment to your face. Thus used pure on the face, it restores the cutaneous barrier of dry skin so that it becomes more comfortable, nourishes mature skin to redensify it, firm it up and reduce wrinkles, regulates the production of sebum in combination to oily skin to fight against unwanted shine and limit the appearance of pimples, calms and softens sensitive and reactive skin to soothe redness and tightness.

When to apply face oil? The good news is that you can use jojoba oil on your face in the morning or at night, on clean, dry skin. The secret to using vegetable oils in both day and night care is actually controlling the amount of oil used for each application as it must be adjusted according to the time of day.

Using jojoba oil on the face in the morning
In the morning, it is important to put very little jojoba oil on your face. Rest assured, a tiny amount of vegetable oil is enough to heal your skin with jojoba oil. Even if it is an oil that leaves a dry touch, it is indeed better to use it sparingly in the morning to be able to then make up your skin easily (that is to say without the residue of oil on your skin does not harm the galenics of your makeup products and does not ruin their application).
The idea is to distribute just two drops of treatment over the entire face to hydrate and protect the epidermis.
The right procedure? Heat the drops of jojoba oil on the pulp of your fingers then apply the oil in small, gentle patches on your face. Then penetrate the treatment by massaging your face very gently with your fingertips, then finish by performing a few smoothing movements from the inside to the outside of the face.

Using jojoba oil on the face at night
In the evening, on the other hand, you can be more generous to provide deep care to your skin overnight. The skin does not need to have absorbed the treatment perfectly before bedtime, because it will draw on the active ingredients present in jojoba oil to regenerate itself more easily during your sleep. The right amount of oil? Between three and five drops of jojoba oil because a small amount of product is still sufficient. No need to mess up.
The right procedure? To fully penetrate the oil into your skin, give your face a real massage for a few minutes. This will also stimulate the blood microcirculation to help your epidermis to be fully receptive to the active ingredients that it can draw from. Rub your hands together to distribute the oil in your palms. Then, with the entire palms of the hands, apply the treatment to the entire face by exerting a slight pressure and making light strokes that start from the bottom of the neck to go towards the chin, from the chin to go to the contour of the jaw , then others which start at the level of the wings of the nose and which go up to the cheekbones, before ending with light strokes starting from the bottom of the forehead to the top of the forehead.

Our advices
On oily or acne-prone skin, jojoba oil is sufficient on its own without worry. So there is no need to build up layers of care to hydrate your skin.
Dry to very dry skin types, on the other hand, will appreciate an extra care after applying the oil, which is therefore used more in place of the serum than as a replacement for the cream for them.

Jojoba oil to boost your facials

You can also mix jojoba oil with your daily moisturizer to enhance its nourishing, protective or rebalancing effects. Add one to two drops of oil to a treatment dose and mix the oil well with the cream before applying it to the face as you normally would.

Jojoba oil as a DIY care ingredient

Jojoba oil is also an easy-to-use ingredient for home care. If you don't want to apply the pure oil to your face, then you can make your own beauty products made from jojoba vegetable oil. All you have to do is mix vegetable oil with a few other natural ingredients (aloe vera, tea tree, sugar, etc.) to obtain face creams adapted to your skin type, scrubs to exfoliate your face, masks face with jojoba oil or targeted treatments for small spots.

Jojoba oil: which is the best oil for the face?

When planning to use jojoba oil on the face, it is all the more important to adopt a pure oil with a controlled origin. To be sure that you are getting a quality oil, prefer organic vegetable oils as they come from organic farming and the plants from which the oil is extracted have not been subjected to any chemical treatment. Organic oil therefore prevents the risk of a bad skin reaction to chemical residues that could be found in vegetable oil from non-organic plants.

In addition, always opt for virgin jojoba oil from a first cold pressing. This ancestral method of extraction which simply consists of pressing the seeds to extract the oil (without subjecting it to high temperatures or using a solvent during the process), guarantees on the one hand an oil rich in active ingredients. (which are sensitive to heat and quickly denatured by it) and therefore more effective, and on the other hand a vegetable oil devoid of chemicals.
