In 2019, Bruce Wayne appeared in “Joker” as Dante Pereira-Olson. We find him, masked, in the sequel released this Wednesday, October 2. Here is the answer – SPOILER ALERT!!!
WARNING – The article below contains small spoilers for “Joker: Folie à Deux”, as it discusses some elements of its plot. Please move on if you haven’t seen it yet.
Like Venom with Spider-Man, it is very difficult to imagine the Joker without Batman (while the opposite is possible), as the Clown Prince of Crime presents himself as the antithesis of the Bat Man on all plans. However, this is what Todd Phillips achieved in 2019 with his billionaire box office film, without the public having the feeling that something was missing.
It must be said that Batman was nevertheless present in the plot centered on Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix). Or rather a young Bruce Wayne (Dante Pereira-Olson) who still had his parents at the start of the feature film, but no longer at the end, since Thomas and Martha were victims of the revolt of which the Joker had been the spark in the streets of Gotham City.
A way, for Todd Phillips, to connect to the mythology of Batman, in a feature film which was to remain without a sequel. Except that the latter, Folie à deux, has just been released in our cinemas, and that it presents us with its version of Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga. But what about the Dark Knight? Because for many, it’s difficult to imagine the rest of the Joker’s adventures without him showing up.
The director, however, managed to resist the temptation, because the shadow of Batman never looms over the film. Perhaps because this sequel takes place a few years after the first opus, and Bruce Wayne would still be too young to patrol the city. And probably to avoid parasitizing the version with Robert Pattinson. But whatever the reason, the result is the same. Which does not prevent the feature film from involving another key character from the DC universe.
In addition to Harley Quinn, Folie à deux features Harvey Dent, played by Harry Lawtey, one of the stars of the Industry series. In the story, the character is still only an assistant prosecutor, but he occupies a central place in the second half of the plot, which takes place within the framework of the Arthur Fleck trial. And it doesn’t take us long to wonder if this sequel isn’t hiding another DC villain origin story.
The answer is no: Harvey’s schizophrenia never manifests itself in one way or another. Nor is he disfigured by a jet of acid (or an explosion that burns half his face like in The Dark Knight). Folie à deux still sends a huge wink to the fans when the trial ends with an explosion that takes away a good part of the courtroom.
While the camera obviously lingers on the Joker, we can see a shocked Harvey in the background. With injuries on only one half of his face. Although very superficial at first glance, this is indeed his transformation into Two-Face, as confirmed by Todd Phillips at Entertainment Weekly. A way of giving an audience a little of what they expect, but not too much either.
Because the director clearly stated, during promotion, that he did not intend to make a Joker 3. Which the ending seems to confirm, and shows that we are more in the wink here than in a desire to enrich the universe that he revealed to us in 2019, by introducing other key characters from the world of Batman, who totally have their place in an opus which also aims to be realistic and down-to-earth.
