In a feature-length documentary, “Joko & Klaas” drew attention to the care emergency in their live broadcast that they won.

Joko Winterscheidt (42) and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf (37) used the airtime they had gained the day before to draw attention to the care emergency in Germany – with a unique campaign. While the everyday life of a nurse was shown from her perspective in real time, numerous nurses from all over the country had the opportunity to speak about their experiences, hopes and fears and made a clear demand on politicians.

In short clips, various nurses had their say, sometimes with shocking reports about their work. Many reported that their work was an affair of the heart, but also of overburdened hospitals that did not have enough staff: “We always plan ahead,” said one of the victims. There are colleagues who have over 300 hours of overtime, says another.

Corona is just the magnifying glass

The corona pandemic caused much more attention to be paid to care at the beginning, but that subsided just as quickly, said a nurse. Corona hit many hospitals hard because they had already reached their limits. Many carers spoke of bad experiences during the pandemic. Patients died alone without their relatives being able to say goodbye to them.

With corona deniers, a nurse went harshly into court. Their ignorance endangers fellow human beings and also the carers on the Corona wards and causes more deaths.

Some protagonists clearly saw politics as being responsible. If the government does not remedy the grievances and ensure fair wages and working conditions, there would be fewer and fewer nurses in the future. “Just imagine that you are lying there and no one is helping you,” one nurse pointed out. You can get into this situation much faster than you can imagine. Another demanded that it should no longer be just about profit and money.

Novelty for the show

The planned 15 minutes turned into a feature-length documentary, which was repeated immediately after its end. Thanks to the help of sponsors, there were no commercial breaks at all. For this unusual idea, Winterscheidt and Heufer-Umlauf had to ask for the help of ProSieben for the first time, as it was said in a message before the broadcast.

The viewers were also included in the program. Heufer-Umlauf asked them to post what they got: “It takes your postings and your experiences,” said Klaas. Because only with a certain volume would the concerns be heard where they should be heard. A call that many people followed. Under the hashtag # not self-evident, thousands of postings on Twitter, Instagram and Co. from speechless, angry and horrified viewers gathered in a very short time.
