With "Jokolade", Joko Winterscheidt brings its own chocolate onto the market. A pun became a serious project.

Under the motto "Enjoy with a clear conscience", ProSieben presenter Joko Winterscheidt (42) is launching his own chocolate with "Jokolade" and wants to declare war on the unjust cocoa industry. "At first I found the pun between chocolate and jokolade simply funny. But when I then dealt more intensively with the cultivation, harvest and trading of cocoa, I realized that there were huge problems there," explains Winterscheidt in an interview with spot on news.

For ages people and nature have been exploited in Ghana, West Africa or the Ivory Coast, for example, a few large corporations determine the business and "simply do too little to bring about change. I didn't want to look on anymore," emphasizes the moderator. The "Jokolade" consists of 99.2 percent transparent and fairly traded cocoa, regardless of the manufacturer, the long-term goal should be 100 percent.

Consumers should look out for Fairtrade seals

How does a consumer generally recognize fair trade chocolate? "On the one hand there is the white and black Fairtrade seal, on the other hand there are also initiatives such as the Open Chain, which works fairly and transparently with cooperatives in West Africa," explains Winterscheidt. "We're cooperating with both of them, as the Open Chain is once again focusing more on combating child labor and slavery."

Trial packages can be pre-ordered from January 29th at jokolade.de, and from February 22nd, four types of "Jokolade", including white chocolate with caramelized hazelnuts, will also be available from Rewe.
