Actor Jonah Hill has landed a new leading role. He becomes Jerry Garcia in the Grateful Dead film from Martin Scorsese.

The band Grateful Dead gets according to the US industry portal “Deadline” a biopic: Apple’s streaming service is developing a film directed by Oscar winner Martin Scorsese (79) about front man Jerry Garcia (1942-1995). Jonah Hill (37) takes on the leading role. The name of the film is not yet known.

Hill and Scorsese worked together on “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013). The flick earned the actor an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The members of the band Grateful Dead are also present as producers in the new music biopic: Bob Weir (74), Phil Lesh (81), Mickey Hart (78) and Bill Kreutzmann (75) will be together with the daughter of their deceased bandmate Trixie Garcia (47) is said to be involved in the project.

Cult band founded in the 60s

As “Deadline” reports with reference to Insider, Apple has secured the rights to use the group’s music catalog for the film through the participation of the band and management. It is still unclear which aspect the strip focuses on.

Grateful Dead were founded in San Francisco in 1965 and are known for their psychedelic rock. The group is said to have given around 3,000 concerts. Frontman Jerry Garcia died of a heart attack in 1995 at the age of 53.
