Jonathan Majors (Ant-Man 3): “I’m not that different from Kang”

The first historical character is Kang himself, as established in the comics. And then there is Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Martin Luther King… All those characters and people who built empires and created things. You inherit all that and you try to understand if there is a guideline, a common thread between them all. What makes the king, the queen, the conquerors, the leaders? Is there a recipe?

I like to play this kind of role. By playing the antagonist, the anti-hero, or whatever you call it, you have more latitude in your expressions, and the opportunity to share more of the human experience… (…) With the hero , we get an idea of ​​how the character is supposed to move and function. With the villain, we are always surprised, or at least we have the opportunity to be surprised. It allowed me not to put any barriers in its creation and its articulation.

Yes, I liked it! You know, this economical way of communicating, speaking only when necessary, and saying only what is necessary. I really liked that. It teaches you to listen more in real life too. And in the end, I’m not that different from Kang in that aspect.

The weather. I shot for a few days on Loki, and in one place. It was more theatrical in a way, like we were shooting a play. On Quantumania, I shot from the first day to the last day, it was a marathon compared to Loki. It was a bit more like cinema, little by little, scene by scene, on different places and different rhythms… In this case, the costumes were also a big difference. “He Who Remains” does his job in robes and sandals. Kang wears him full combat gear and war boots.

I love fans. They let you know how it is, and you have to be strong enough and do your job well enough to accomplish it. I tried to stay away from all comparisons, because that’s the best way to be unhappy. But I’m an athlete, and I’m all about it, and I want to achieve that and do my best. We do it for the fans and for the people, so you want them to be satisfied and happy with the work. Like everything I do, I get involved in my work, I do my homework. So no pressure, just work.

You said the scale is probably the only difference, but I don’t really care about that. The script is printed on paper. Dialogues remain dialogues, and work is work. Certainly, there are more special effects, more texts for different reasons. There are of course the fans and the responsibility for the original artwork and comics, but the same can be said for any franchise. You said it yourself: it’s the scale of production that’s different. But that doesn’t change my approach, nor the time at which I have to show up on set.

I like it, with fervor. It’s a huge opportunity for a young actor to be able to take on such responsibilities, and in a universe like the MCU. Creatively, it gives me a great chance to continue to grow as an artist and to push these characters, and to join the Marvel universe but also the cinematic landscape as a whole. It’s rare to be part of a franchise, let alone multiple movies, with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in particular, to move it forward. It’s really awesome. I am very excited to be part of it.
