In a TV interview, Joshua Kimmich commented on his initial concerns about vaccination and the criticism of himself.

Joshua Kimmich (26) spoke about his health at a TV appearance and announced that he wanted to be vaccinated after initial concerns. In an interview with “sportstudio reportage”, which was broadcast this Sunday (December 12th) at 5:10 p.m. on ZDF, he first explained about his corona infection: “It was a very difficult time for me, even if the course of my illness was relatively mild and I had few symptoms had.” In addition to the short-term loss of taste and smell, the doctors found during a final examination that there was still fluid in his lungs and that he had to “calm down” for ten days before he could start training normally again.

When asked why he did not get vaccinated, Kimmich explains: “For a long time, I saw both the disease and vaccination risks. I thought I can protect myself if I stick to the measures.” It had been tested every three days and could therefore also have ruled out any danger to others. Due to the fourth wave and the increasing incidences, he now realized that you can not only influence the situation through your own behavior.

Bayern-Star already had a vaccination appointment

Now the Bayern player wants to be vaccinated according to his own statement. “I even had a vaccination appointment during my second quarantine phase as a contact person. Unfortunately, the disease came before me.” In a few days he will now be considered recovered, this status will then last for a while and “if it is recommended, I will be vaccinated”. Of course, it would have been better to get vaccinated earlier, admits Kimmich, then he would not have had to go into quarantine as a contact person. “Maybe I had to go through what I’ve been through now. Of course, looking back, I would like to make the decision to vaccinate earlier, but at the time it wasn’t possible for me.”

Regarding the criticism that he received because he was not vaccinated, Kimmich said: “At the end of the day it is everyone’s decision, so everyone has to accept it.” On the other hand, from a sporting point of view, he can understand if the team is annoyed when a teammate is missing. The guilty conscience is definitely there. “First and foremost towards my family, who had to listen to a lot. But of course also towards my team-mates.”

Joshua Kimmich: “Some limits have been exceeded”

He could understand any factual criticism. “Nevertheless, some limits were exceeded. I had the feeling that there was one or the other who wanted to make a name for himself through the discussion.” Although he has a role model function, he is “only a person who has fears and concerns”. In politics, “many mistakes were made” in the exceptional pandemic situation. “And that’s also why I don’t quite understand why people like me weren’t allowed to make these mistakes. I lacked the differentiated.”

The intrusion into his private life, reporters even showed up at his grandfather’s funeral, made him ask the question: “Where is the limit, how do we want to deal with one another in our society?” Respect, tolerance and openness were extremely lacking in the discussion.

“It is not the right way to put everyone under pressure until they can no longer”, says Kimmich. Of course there are people like conspiracy theorists and lateral thinkers, from whom he clearly distances himself. “But I think there are still people who are indecisive, who have fears and concerns. And if we now say: We have clarified enough, now we have to exert pressure, I am not sure whether this is the right way to go . That will lead to an even greater division in our society. “

The professional footballer had caused countless discussions over the past few weeks with his vaccination status. In October he made public that he had not yet been vaccinated against the virus and justified this with a lack of “long-term studies”. At the end of November, the player tested positive for the corona virus. On December 9th, FC Bayern announced that after the quarantine had ended “due to slight infiltrations in the lungs”, he would be out until the end of the year.
