At the end of January 2023, the C8 channel once again found itself at the heart of a controversy. A complaint had been filed in the name of Joy Hallyday for “public insult” following a slip-up which occurred in the middle of the broadcast. This Tuesday, an official press release announced the fine imposed on the Canal+ group.

It was a slip-up that caused a lot of noise. On January 30, 2023, the show Do not touch My TV was singled out, and more particularly the columnist Kelly Vedovelli. For good reason, at the time, she made very harsh and offensive remarks against Joy Hallyday, the youngest daughter of Laeticia and Johnny Hallyday, only 14 years old.

When she was invited to speak about Joy’s TikTok videos, Kelly Vedovelli said: “For me it’s the height of vulgarity (…) For me it’s super vulgar, with her tongue, her mouth, her tits. (…) Whether it’s her or another teenager, you can’t do that! Because it’s the new generation we have the right to be tepus (verban of ‘whores’, editor’s note) ? No but stop“. The sequence quickly went around the Internet and sparked numerous reactions. Faced with the growing controversy, Laeticia Hallyday called on her lawyer and, on February 20, a press release announced that she had filed a complaint for “public insult“.

A high sum to pay for C8

A year later, the verdict fell and the courts ruled in favor of the Hallydays. The C8 channel was thus ordered to pay a fine of 50,000 euros. The sequence is “likely to undermine the rights of the young girl, respect for her honor and reputation“, justified the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication (Arcom), published in the Official Journal this Tuesday, January 23.

Arcom also denounces the bad reaction of host Cyril Hanouna. The host had not condemned “explicitly the words“from his columnist, he who was aware that Joy Hallyday is only a teenager. Thus, the body considered that there had been a breach of obligations”honesty and rigor in the presentation and processing of information, as well as the obligation to express different points of view on controversial issues“.
