Jude Law: He deeply regrets this career decision

British actor Jude Law, 51, can look back on a remarkable career that has lasted for 35 years. In the 1990s in particular, he blossomed into a Hollywood heartthrob, and in 2004 he was consequently named “Sexiest Man Alive”. In retrospect, however, Law associates his greatest regret with this phase of his career, as he according to British media revealed to the magazine “DuJour”.

He now worries that he “fought too hard against my appearance in my 20s.” Back then, he didn’t want to be reduced to the reputation of being a pretty boy, so he actively fought against this cliché. Looking back now, when the 51-year-old jokingly describes himself as “slack and bald,” Law wishes he had “let off more steam” back then.

From bitter astronaut to paranoid king

Jude Law celebrated his international breakthrough in 1997 with “Gattaca”. In the dystopian sci-fi film, he plays a genetically optimized man alongside Ethan Hawke, 53, who is confined to a wheelchair due to an accident and has therefore had to abandon his dream of traveling into space. With films such as “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999) and “Cold Mountain” (2003), he subsequently earned a reputation – whether he wanted it or not – as a charming love interest.

Even though he looks back on the beginning of his career with some regret, he is extremely satisfied with how it has gone. He now even finds it “satisfying” to embody characters who are far removed from “any kind of attractiveness”.

He provides proof of this in his latest work: In the historical drama “Firebrand”, Law shows off his unpretentious side. With thick make-up and a bushy beard, he is made to look old and embodies the tyrannical and paranoid King Henry VIII. At the Cannes Film Festival, Law revealed that he had apparently adapted to the hygiene rules of the 16th century for the role: “I thought it would have a great effect if I smelled horrible.”
