Juicy price increases – First collection campaign: Starting school as a debt trap

The price increases are hitting families particularly hard. More and more people are dependent on help. The first day of school often means an additional burden. A collection campaign is now starting!

Many students are still writing their final exams or their last school assignments of the year. They are looking forward to their well-earned summer holidays. But the thought of the new school year is already making some parents sweat. Tutoring during the summer holidays or the first day of school with all its new purchases brings families to the brink of financial ruin. The figures also prove this.Prices have risen by 50 percent in some cases. School bags, notebooks and pens have become noticeably more expensive in recent years (see graphic). For individual products, you have to pay almost a quarter more than you did five years ago. And there is almost no upper limit for school bags, for example. Given the additional expenses, families are already having to tighten their belts or are dependent on help.Young Viennese show solidarityThe first fundraising campaign “Solidarity makes school” is now starting in Vienna. The idea for this was developed by young people from Vienna themselves as part of the Children and Youth Millions campaign. “With the collection campaign, we are creating more opportunities for all children and young people,” said Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr.Parents sometimes have to shell out for a new school bag from a popular brand. This is not possible for many families with several children.Donate school suppliesWell-preserved or new school supplies can be handed in at two locations from now until June 24th: Wienxtra-Jugendinfo (1st, Babenbergerstrasse 1) and Wienxtra-Kinderinfo (7th, Museumsquartier 2).Volkshilfe distributes donationsAt the end of June, all donated school supplies will be distributed to needy students via the Volkshilfe district associations, which will make the costly start to school much easier for many families. And the need is there. Experts estimate that almost one in five children is already at risk of poverty. There seems to be no improvement in sight.
