June 12 – The time of the “papitan” – Father’s Day gifts

The daughter of a US Liberation War veteran, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, is credited with being the woman who launched Father’s Day. Although a Father’s Day was observed as early as 1908 in honor of the miners who lost their lives in the Monogah mining disaster, the official holiday was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. As Sonora Smart Dodd wanted, in honor of her father, William Jackson Smart. President Woodrow Wilson took note of the celebrations in 1916.
