Junta announces democratic transition until March 2024

BAMAKO (Reuters) – Mali’s interim government said on Monday it would take 24 months, starting last March, to complete the country’s democratic transition following the August 2020 military coup, as the junta is under pressure to organize elections.

By failing to promise to hold elections in February, the junta has amplified a row with France and its regional partners, with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWA) taking sanctions against Bamako.

Speaking on national television, the spokesman for the interim government declared that “the duration of the transition is fixed at 24 months”, specifying that the transition had started on March 26th.
